Skill Builder BOM 2014
Well, this year is coming to an end and so is the 2013 Skill Builder BOM. What an amazing year of learning! My ultimate goal with Skill Builder BOM was that you and I would walk away with greater knowledge of different quilting techniques and increased confidence in our sewing abilities. Looking over your blocks from this year I am totally blown away at how much you all have grown. Many of you had never even tried free motion quilting when we started, and now I see you quilting entire quilts with beautiful unique designs. I am very proud of you all!
This year was also an incredible learning experience for myself. Not only did I acquire new quilting techniques, but I also learned so much about blogging, writing instructions, creating videos, and teaching. I am so excited to continue this fun into next year, so without further ado, I would like to present the 2014 Skill Builder Block of the Month.
The BOM Details
This year, I chose to design a quilt with an overall theme. The quilt is called For the Love of Sewing. How often do you sew for yourself? Most quilters I meet are working on projects for their loved ones. My hope is that you will spend a little time each month working on a fun project just for you! The quilt incorporates a total of 15 blocks which vary in size to create an irregular grid. The finished quilt will be 52” x 56” which is an average throw/lap size quilt.
Each block in this quilt is unique! Over the course of the year, I will be instructing you in the following techniques:
- Raw-edge Applique
- Layered Applique
- Foundation Paper Piecing
- Free Form Piec-lique
- Inset Piec-lique
- Basic Embroidery
- Strip Piecing
- Slash and Stitch
Quilting and Finishing the Quilt
Based on participant feedback, one of the most helpful aspects of the 2013 Skill Builder BOM was practicing free motion and straight line quilting. So again this year, we will be quilting each block as we go, and I will be including a lesson for quilting each month.
This means we will also be piecing together our quilted blocks with the same binding method as last year. However, this year the blocks will include extra sizing to allow for quilting shrinkage (as opposed to adding borders to each block) and the joining strips between blocks will be wider, more like sashing.
Join the fun!
In 2013, I offered the first Skill Builder BOM for free. This worked out great because it gave you all a chance to try it out and get a feel for the format. It also allowed me to work out the kinks and improve for this year.
Next year, the 2014 Skill Building BOM will be offered as a paid online course. I am excited to announce a new extension of Pile O’ Fabric called the Sewing Room. The Sewing Room is where you can purchase/register to have access to courses on the Sewing Room interactive learning platform. This is where I will be teaching the 2014 Block of the Month (and soon other courses).
The Block of the Month will include the same great features as last year (such as videos, step-by-step photos and PDF downloads), and now it will also include private access to a fun interactive classroom where you can learn, discuss, get help, gain points to win prizes, and share with others. You will be given lifetime access to the course and the chance to work at your own pace, just in case you need more time! Another great improvement is that this year I have recruited three fantastic testers who will be making the blocks with me a month in advance, so you can rest assured that the lessons will be clear and accurate. I am also offering a complete yardage and supply list this year so there will be no surprises! Optional supply kits can be purchased in the Sewing Room in advance.
