A non-sewing event for our Event Series

On Thursdays I have been going through a Quilting & Sewing Events 101 blog series here at Pile O' Fabric. So far we have talked about Quilting Bee's 101, and Swaps 101. But, today I will be taking a slight detour. I have been busily sewing away for a very special event. Not a sewing event, but a baby shower! My sister is pregnant with her second son and her shower is this weekend.

I started planning this quilt as soon as I found out she was pregnant, and even bought the fabric months ago. Somehow though my 7 months of plenty of time to sew, is now one week and I just started. Hmm, sound familiar? If you have read my blog for any amount of time you may see a consistent trend. I have a habit working on projects at the last minute. I suppose I work well under pressure.

HSTs for Puma Zig-Zag Quilt

In my W.i.P. post last week I posted about this quilt. I'm making an HST Zig-Zag Quilt, with Remix by Anne Kelle for Robert Kaufman. I chose this fabric, because my sister and her husband love the brand Puma, and the colors in this collection are often used in Puma's branding.

Princess Picnic in Moms Sewing Room

I woke up ready to get to work on the quilt, but to my surprise my daughter decided to host a Princess Picnic in my sewing room. Well that was definitely an event I could not miss!

After the "picnic" was over. I went to work piecing the rows. I was able to finish the quilt top this morning.

Oh, Fransson! New Refrigerator Blocks Pattern Oh, Fransson! New Refrigerator Blocks Pattern

This afternoon I have been working on the back of the quilt. My plan for the back was to try incorporate my soon-to-be nephews name. I thought about doing appliqué letters, but part of me really wanted to learn how to paper piece letters. A few weeks ago I had seen Elizabeth at Oh, Fransson! post about new alphabet patterns she was making. She calls them her Refrigerator Magnets Quilt Blocks. It is a collection of the whole alphabet in upper and lower case, including a complete set of numbers and punctuation! Well the timing could not have been more perfect, she announced that the patterns are in her store for sale this morning! And they are 20% off through Sunday!

The explanation in these patterns is so thorough, I have completed B, R, E, and A, now I just need to do three N's. What's that spell, BRENNAN!

Pressing Table or Mini Clover Station Pressing Table or Mini Clover Station Pressing Table or Mini Clover Station

All day I have been putting my new little pressing table to work. About a week ago Jacey at JaceyCraft posted a picture on flickr of a TV Tray turned iron/pressing table. This was exactly what I needed. I have 3 large desks in my room, but somehow now of them seem convenient enough for pressing. My iron is on the other side of the room from my sewing machine and I got tired of walking over there, so for a while I used a pillow case on my desk right next to my sewing machine. This was tacky and not cool. So I went out and got myself a TV tray, some batting, and a few yards of home decor fabric from Ikea. And now I have a new pressing table, that conveniently slides under my desk when I'm not using it. I even hooked my little Mini Clover to the side for quick access.

Backing Fabric for Puma Zig-Zag Quilt

It is 4:30 p.m. here, I have three letters left then I will have to add red sashing around the entire name and sew it together with the backing fabric.(above) Then I need to baste, quilt, and bind, somehow before Saturday at 6 a.m. Hmm, not looking to good, but a girl can try right?!

I should mention too, I was planning on making a few appliquéd onesies and burp cloths. Crazy? Maybe!

We will get back to our Events Series next week. Meanwhile this weekend I have some exciting stuff happening here on the blog. Check back tomorrow for an extremely amazing giveaway. Can you say fabric, and discounts! :)
