Bloggers Quilt Festival - Fall 2012

Wow how the time flies! One of my favorite online events is going on right now and happens twice a year over at Amy's Creative Side. The Blogger's Quilt Festival, is an online quilt show and it is fabulous! Last festival in spring I submitted my Black & White Memories Quilt. I have made quite a few quilt's since then so choosing which one I would enter into the festival was really hard!

Welcome to those of you visiting Pile O' Fabric for the first time, I would love it if you would stay a while and have a look around. You can read a little bit about the behind scenes details of this blog here. There is currently a bunch of fun things happening here which you may like :)

Patchwork Prism Quilt

Back by "popular demand" haha sorry that is just so much to say! I present to you my Patchwork Prism Quilt.

I made the Patchwork Prism quilt during the Patchwork Prism QAL at Sweet Diesel Designs. This was the first QAL I had ever participated and was highly influential when planning the Totally Groovy QAL which I am hosting.

I blogged about the entire process of creating this quilt over a period of 2 months and you can see all of those posts here

Patchwork Prism QAL - Planning Colors

When I originally saw the pattern for this quilt I thought that it was very beautiful, but I wanted to really make it my own style. Well the answer to that was solids. I love love working with solids.

Kona Charms for Patchwork Prism

First I had to figure out how I would use all solids, without completely breaking the bank. Purchasing yardage of each color would have been way too expensive, so I decided to downsize the pattern by 50% and order five Kona Charms packs from Fat Quarter Shop.

Arranging the Purples and Reds

Once I got my charm packs I divided them into colors and counted out how much of each color I had. I was really low on the gold and yellows, so I decided to make some changes to the color layout in the pattern. I played around in photoshop for a few hours until I came up with a new layout.

Cutting is Done!

I spent about 4 weeks choosing colors and cutting the pieces. Each day I just stood back and stared at the progress of the quilt on my design wall. I'd move a few colors around, and go about the rest of my day. Taking my time on this step was crucial.

Patchwork Prism Backing

I tossed around backing ideas for a few days. This was another part of the process I really struggled with. Since this is a wall hanging, I didn't want to go to crazy on the back. At the same time though I didn't want it to be just one solid color. After days of brainstorming I decided to repeat the center hexagon on the back using all shades of my favorite color, green.

Quilting Patchwork Prism

The biggest challenge of the whole project was the quilting. I knew from the second I saw the pattern exactly how I wanted to quilt it. Echo quilting the hexagons from the center out. It would have been fairly simply, but I ran into sewing machine trouble along the way which was a huge bummer. I am so thankful for my new Juki sewing machine.

Patchwork Prism is now hanging in my sewing room :) I love organization! Just got done putting new shelves up :) time for bed!

This quilt inspires me everyday. It now hangs right above my sewing machine in my studio and I love it.
