Skill Builder BOM 2015

When I started the Skill Builder Block of the Month in 2013, I had a strong desire to learn new things and build up my skill level in sewing. I thought if I made the project available to my readers it would give me motivation, accountability and it would help others to grow as well. Little did I know that the Skill Builder BOM would help me and others to grow by leaps and bounds. This block of the month allows me to continue learning not only about sewing, but about being a teacher, instructional writer, photographer, video maker, and more. I have so much more growing and learning to do so I am very excited for another year of Skill Builder BOM! Without further ado meet this years Skill Builder BOM quilt Technicolor Galaxy.

Skill Builder BOM 2015

This year I wanted to design a quilt focused on color and wanted to it to be more of a medallion style quilt. After I finished the design my good friend, technical editor and the tester for this years quilt, Danny Heyen, thought of the totally cool name, Technicolor Galaxy. The quilt kind of has a celestial, outer space feel to it with the center star, half moons, and circular orbital shape.

THE BOM DETAILS

Are you looking for a fun project that will test your skills and help you to learn? Well here are the details of the Skill Builder BOM 2015.

What You Will Learn

Throughout the course of the block of the month you will get experience with bias applique, foundation paper piecing, raw-edge applique, english paper piecing, turned edge applique, curves piecing, strip piecing, improvisational piecing, free motion quilting, and straight line quilting.

Once a month I will post a lesson which includes step-by-step instructions of how to piece that months block along with necessary templates. Most lessons also include videos with up close instruction for particular techniques.

These lessons will be posted on a private class blog and after you purchase the BOM you can access the class lessons anytime (forever!) by logging into your Pile O' Fabric customer account. (For those of you who participated in this years 2014 BOM this is a different setup, way more simple and easy to access.)

Just like the past two Skill Builder Block of the Month's this is a quilt-as-you-go project. Each block/segment is quilted separately throughout the year and then the entire quilt is assembled together using binding joints (the white lines). The Technicolor Galaxy quilt finishes at 60" x 60", making it a nice throw or lap quilt.

What You Will Need

The computer mockup of the quilt is in solids, but I am making my version of the quilt in a mix of Kona Cotton Solids and various rainbow prints.

Technicolor Galaxy Quilt Kit

This year I have put together a Skill Builder BOM Quilt Kit for those of you who would like to make the rainbow version similar to mine. Hopefully this kit will make preparing for the BOM easier for you. I have also grouped together all of the supplies we will be using during the class in a Skill Builder BOM 2015 Collection in my shop making it easy to find.
